Hello! – and welcome to the website of Mr. Julian Alexander Dutton ~ writer, performer, impressionist & voice artist. Do have a seat.
WHO AM I?
I am a comedy writer/performer, actor, impressionist & voice artist mainly in the fields of TV & Radio whose work has won a British Comedy Award and a BAFTA. There, I’ve said it.
WHAT AM I DOING NOW?
My 6-part TV comedy series with Matt Lucas (of ‘Little Britain’ fame) ~ an all-visual comedy show commissioned by BBC2 called ‘Pompidou!’ ~ is currently being shown in 192 countries around the world on Netflix. Click on POMPIDOU! link on the right for more details and updates. My animated children’s series, ‘Little People’ is being broadcast in the USA & Canada, and I am working on a feature animation for Locksmith Productions & Paramount.
BUT WHAT HAVE YOU DONE IN THE PAST?
Steady on. Born in London, I have toured as an actor throughout the UK & Europe and as a comedian and impressionist have appeared in the West End supporting many of Britain’s top comics like Harry Hill and Al Murray. I co-created, wrote & performed in BBC1’s hit comedy series ‘The Big Impression,’ (which won a British Comedy Award & a BAFTA for Best Entertainment Programme) ~ and my TV sitcom ‘Scoop’ is now in its third season on CBBC, totalling 39 half-hour episodes.
I’ve written & performed in many children’s comedy series including Spoof!, Driving Me Mad, and the long-running legendary series Chucklevision, plus more than two hundred radio comedy shows ~ including my own series ‘Truly, Madly, Bletchley,’ the impressions show ‘The Secret World,’ now in its fourth series, ‘Ukridge,’ starring Griff Rhys Jones, ‘The Harpoon,’ ‘Inside Alan Francis,’ and ‘Les Kelly’s Britain,’ plus many more.
I’ve had columns in ‘The Sunday Times,’ ‘The Independent on Sunday’ and the ‘London Evening Standard.’
I have voiced, written & performed in many adverts over the years, including the 2nd Secret Lemonade Drinker Ads ~ one with the great Ronnie Corbett.
I’ve also written three books: my latest is “KEEPING QUIET: VISUAL COMEDY IN THE AGE OF SOUND,” published by Chaplin Books. Described as a “brilliant history of modern slapstick” by Harry Hill, it tells the complete story of everyone’s favourite visual comedians from the advent of sound to the present day, from Chaplin to Mr. Bean:
I’ve also written a historical travelogue, “Shakespeare’s Journey Home” –
– and a book of humorous travel pieces “The Bumper Book of Curious Clubs” –
